PRASANT - a digital initiative

Dear reader,

We invite you all to join the project – “PRASANT”- a digital initiative at IDCO slum. The project aims to purchase 5 computers for the slum, which provide computer education to primary & middle school children from socially and economically backward. This we believe can help them live a life of dignity and confidence.

This project is named after our beloved friend Prasant, who was a young, dynamic thinker. Unfortunately he left us behind the mortal world. He was a participant of Otv social program and gave his high valued logical idea to change the society.

Rest in Peace Prasant, you are always our inspiration and remain in our heart forever.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to you for your continued support of our Initiative. If you donate to this project or have donated to our organization, you will get messages when this project posts a report. You can also subscribe the rss feed.

Help raise money for this important cause. Any two digit can make a big change. You can change at least one child in the world.

ONE STEP TOWARDS SLUM UP-GRADATION

Education can change a society and it needs proper guidance. We the members of “You Can Change One” take an initiative step to guide the basti pupils. We started to provide free education. After 2 months of teaching at Basti(Slum),we decided to gather more children from the slum. Therefore it needed some attraction. We decided to make some program, so that more students can be attracted to our organization. We talked to local leaders about it. They said it is a very good initiative and they will help us to do the program success.

First we talked to the Basti committee about our program. They appreciate it .We said we are planning to organize drawing and singing competition. They request us to add sports 100mt, 200mt running (separate boys and girls) , Puchi (girls). We appreciate their suggestions but we have not enough money to arrange the sports. They told us that committee will help us for sports and they will discuss about it with other members in their meeting.
We were ready for our program. We calculate the estimates. It will cost around 7000/- to 8000/- to make our program, smoothly. We talk to tent house for 100 chairs,5 guest chairs, back side banner, 3- dari, 1 mike set for the open stage of the basti. Then we talk to Sudarsana Dash (socialist) about the program. We fix it on Sunday 21-02-2016. We bought prizes and all other necessary things.
We make posters for social media. We invite our friends to attend the 1st convention. We gave advance for the videography and tent house. Now it looks like a huge public program. We think to arrange more 2000/- . In this way we can handle any adverse situation may arise. So we request our friends (who are doing jobs) to donate some amount.
Everything is going very well.

On date 19-02-2016, evening Basti Committee called us and said they can’t give the stage. We talk to them, what the problem is all about. We guess that they may be thinking it as political show. But actually they said that they talk to other members. Committee asking about slum Durga Puja collection dispute. So without clearing there dispute they can’t give us the stage.
We are surprised that without a stage how Sudarsan Dash will react. Because we already talk to him to attend the program on 21-02-2016 at 4.00pm. We talk to tent house for a wooden stage. They said it will cost 9000/-. Its looks like that the program may be canceled. What about the children of basti , Who are so much interested to take part in the competition. So we think to do the program without stage.

Now we have to talk with Mr Sudarsana Dash, about the problem. We met him. He said this is not a big issue. Without stage he can visit to us. So now we think to eliminate sports and do the drawing and singing competition. We want to encourage children for the social changes and the date same as we decided.

A Slum Boy

Sarankul is a famous place for Ladukesh Mahadeb Temple. While we are on a visit to Sarankul,Nayagarh we stopped at a Dhaaba (roadside restaurant) at Bolagarh on the highway to eat. While all the other members of the group got busy in ordering food I saw a guy standing right in front of dhabaa and doing something with a cloth in his hand and seemed more like a dance, so out of curiosity I went to see what was happening and this is the conversation I had with the guy(referred as X) .

Me:- What are you trying to do?
X:- There are a lot of dhaabas around so am trying to woo the attention of the drivers to stop at ours.
Me:- Is it really helpful?
X:- Obviously it is. Cars drive so quick on highways that if we won't tell them we exist then they won't even notice.
Me:- aare badhiya ( Great )
X:- Look at the adjacent dhaaba, he's also trying to do the same.
Me:- Ohh I see. Well my name is Sujit and what's yours?
X:- Jaga.
Me:- How much money do you make via doing this?
X:- 4k and plus I get all the meals (with a huge smile on his face )
Me :- You seem so young, Don't you go to school?
X:- I do. My school is till 2 and then I come here to work.
Me:- It must be hard and tiring.
X:- No I love it and plus my mom feels proud of me too.
Me:- Sure they do. What class are you in ?
X:- 10th. I'll leave this work next month as my board exams are approaching. I want to be an IAS.
Me:- Its one of the toughest exams.
X:- Am one of the brightest in my school. My headmaster says that I'll do something great with my life.
Me:- Why IAS?
X:- There's no electricity in my village and no irrigation facilities. Sometimes I stay here only in night so that I can study as there's no electricity back home. My dad once went to poop in the fields in the morning and never came back. He was bitten by a poisonous snake. He could have been saved but the  hospital is in adjacent village so by the time we got there he was already dead. And as I grew up I could observe how hard it was for mother to take care of me and my sister. Making us sleep with a full stomach and paying our school fees became her only motive in life .What happened with my family should not happen with any other in the village so I'll be an IAS and change every bit of it .

Even though the guy was just 14 or 15 but he still had dreams, that too for the collective good for all his village mates. I often feel so scared of dreaming. What if am never able to achieve it? What If i don't turn out to be the best at it.

But the courage I saw in his eyes was something truly unique. I haven't found the same again till now in anyone.
